Resource degradation processes in Eastern Nile countries have impacts not only locally, but far downstream within and beyond the borders of the country within which they occur. The most significant impacts of land degradation in the Eastern Nile Basin are:
Developing a sustainable framework for watershed management and proposals for interventions must address not only the proximate causes of resource degradation but also the complex underlying and inter-related causes. The focus of the watershed management program of interventions must be on achieving sustainable livelihoods, expanding the range of available livelihood strategies, and reducing the vulnerability of communities and households to natural, social, and economic shocks.
ENTRO studies and projects have generated a substantial number of data sets and information, including modelling products and toolkits produced by interns and young professionals, which needed to be organized, quality controlled, managed, stored, and disseminated for internal and external users.
The Eastern Nile Planning Model is one of the original ENSAP ‘fast track’ projects – largely sectorally-focused, nationally-implemented projects agreed in a regional context to demonstrate the tangible benefits of cooperation - intended to provide a knowledge platform for cooperation discussions on the Eastern Nile, make the best use of the available information, and be adaptable for future needs.
