Coordinated Operation of Cascades of Dams

CONTEXT

Dam Safety

CONTEXT

Based on the initial dam safety reviews carried out, is clear that comprehensive dam safety management programs operated by the dam owners and supervised by appropriate regulatory agencies are required for all existing and new large dams in each of the Eastern Nile countries, coupled with the necessary transfer of technological know-how to help them protect the assets and the public from dam failure.

CONTEXT

Hydromet System

CONTEXT

The current system of Nile Basin monitoring is far from adequate: Many significant portions of the Nile Basin are either un-gauged or very sparsely gauged even with respect to basic hydrological parameters; Data collection and maintenance of previously installed stations has lapsed for an extended period of time; Data collected from the existing operational stations often exhibit breaks in the records, which makes the data unsuitable for many purposes; The degree of automation of the hydrometric networks is very low; and telemetry is not used in most countries.

CONTEXT

Ethiopia-Sudan Power System Interconnection

CONTEXT

The power interconnection project involved the construction of a high voltage transmission line from Ethiopia to Sudan to utilise surplus hydropower from Ethiopia to replace oil-based thermal generation in Sudan. The interconnection was also to benefit common reserves in emergency cases (electricity could be transferred from Sudan to Ethiopia under severe hydrological conditions in Ethiopia) and achieve considerable savings in timing of power plants in the long run.
